This vacation is for travelers in good physical condition, many hikes are several miles and considered moderate to advanced. Get to know Costa Rica in a whole new way. This intense vacation ends with a few days of rest and relaxation at the beach, a picture perfect ending.
This is just an example of a hiking adventure, hundreds of trails await you and we can combine them in a number of ways.
Day 1 ~ Arrival ~ (San Jose or Liberia)
Private Transfer to Arenal – (approx. 3 hours) – Your private driver will be waiting outside the airport to take you to your first destination. Vehicles have WiFi for your convenience.
Check In Arenal Observatory Lodge – Smithsonian Room – This is as close to the volcano as you can get! The Arenal Observatory Lodge has extensive hiking trails on the property and prolific flora & fauna.
Day 2 ~ Arenal ~ (B,L)
Rio Celeste Hike – Our journey begins with an early morning scenic drive through rural Costa Rica to Tenorio Volcano National Park. From there, we’ll begin our 4-hour intermediate hike (approximately 7km) through the surrounding tropical rainforest. We then arrive to “Los Teñíderos” where two rivers come together to form the celestial turquoise blue water color that gives the river its name. We’ll return back through the national park to the “ollas” mud baths and take a moment to relax. We then arrive at the spectacular Río Celeste waterfall – the perfect place to take photos. We finish off with a delicious local lunch as we head back to La Fortuna.
Day 3 ~ Arenal ~ (B,L,D)
Cerro Chato Guided Hike – The Cerro Chato hike near the Arenal Volcano is an intense 4-5 hour hike through lush rainforest to the rim of the crater of the extinct volcano called Cerro Chato. Once you arrive at the crater, you then drop down to an emerald-green lagoon. Catch your breath and take some photos because this is a “Kodak Moment.” You then hike back out and descend down to the base.
If it’s clear, you’ll get great views of the majestic Arenal Volcano along the way and then have an opportunity to visit the stunning 150-ft La Fortuna waterfall. Have a swim in the refreshing, clear river pools at the base of the waterfall. There are changing facilities as you come back up to the top. Recommended for people in good shape and willing to hike in extreme conditions.
Evening at Eco Termales – Evening pass and dinner at Eco Termales Thermal Pools. This is a great and relaxing way to end a day. Enjoy the springs until closing
Day 4 ~ Arenal ~ Monteverde ~ (B)
Boat transfer to Monteverde – An adventure in itself, travel by boat across lake Arenal and then 4×4 to Monteverde. This is the fastest and a very scenic way to travel between the Arenal Vocano and the cloud forests of Monteverde. This transfer operates in either direction and you get great views of the Arenal Volcano and the unspoiled and tropical Lake Arenal.

Hidden Valley Night Tour – Located near the Cerro Plano area between Santa Elena and the Monteverde Reserve the Hidden Valley trail offers the ideal forest and elevation to view the incredible wildlife of the tropics. For those who wish to observe wonders hidden in the forest after dark, we offer guided night hikes. The tour begins just before nightfall, allowing us to see a wide variety of nocturnal creatures. The walk starts at 5:30 pm after enjoying the beautiful sunset guests will be amazed the forest seems to awaken during the transition to night. The naturalist guide will explain many of the unique features of the forest and creatures that inhabit it while navigating the trails, the tour ends at 7:30 P.M.
The Hidden Valley organization is committed to seeing protected areas like Hidden Valley Trail carry on forever in hopes of guaranteeing a better quality of life for future generations. At that time when founder David Savage acquired 11 hectares of the tropical forest much of the surrounding land was being converted to farming however the Savage family resisted and decided to protect it, preserving it into what is today Hidden Valley Trail.
Day 5 ~ Monteverde ~ (B,L)
Day at Selvatura Park – Zipline Canopy Tour, Hanging Bridges, Hummingbird Gardens, Butterfly Gardens – Selvatura Adventure Park’s Canopy Tour is one of the safest extreme adventures in Costa Rica! Our Canopy Tour guides start by harnessing you with all the appropriate equipment after which they will lecture you on all the safety procedures to enjoy this amazing adventure with our “Safety First” motto. You will then be flying through 15 cables and 18 platforms with an optional Tarzan Swing at the end of the adventure. Selvatura Park is one of the longest Canopy Tours in Costa Rica. Also it is the only canopy tour located inside the Monteverde Cloud Forest.
Selvatura’s Tree Top Walkways consist of a 1.9 mile (approximately 3 kilometer) trail that crosses through the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Here visitors will walk on eight different bridges with various lengths ranging between 150 feet ( 50 meters ) up to 510 feet (170 meters) and altitudes ranging between 36 feet ( 12 meters ) up to 180 feet ( 60 meters ). Each bridge has a width of five feet, the widest bridges in Costa Rica, and also a capacity of up to 80 people per bridge making them both the longest and strongest bridge systems in the Monteverde Cloud Forest.
Hummingbird Garden – Imagine yourself in a beautiful garden. Now imagine over 100 beautiful hummingbirds flying cheerfully around you! More than 14 species of hummingbirds will amaze you with their incredible aerial maneuvers and bright lively colors.
Butterfly Gardens – Venture into exploring a different world. A world in which a controlled climate provides the best temperature (82.4º F or 28º C) for its inhabitants to feel in paradise. Explore a community that gathers more than 20 species of butterflies. Learn about their life cycle, their special abilities and behaviors that have helped them evolve throughout thousands of years. Enjoy a guided walk inside one of the world’s largest live butterfly exhibitions with an area of over 29,000 square feet (2,700 square meters). Come and enjoy all the wonders that you may discover in this marvelous World of Butterflies.
Day 6 ~ Monteverde ~ Mal Pais ~ (B)
Private or Shared Shuttle Transfer to Mal Pais – (approx. 5 hours) – Out of the mountains and down to the coast for some beach time. The Nicoya Peninsula and Mal Pais area is the backdrop for your time here on the Pacific.

Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve Hike – One of Costa Rica’s National Parks, The Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve is Costa Rica’s first national park, part of the Tempisque Conservation Area in the province of Puntarenas, covering an area of 3,140 acres (12.7 km2) terrestrial and 4,420 acres (17.9 km2) marine on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula near Mal Pais and Cabuya. You will find the entrance to the park on the Cabuya side. The reserve was created in 1963 due to a campaign started by Olof Wessberg. This was the first major conservation project in the country. The refuge is part of the Pacific dry region climate and has 119 species of trees. The reserve, which includes 1,800 hectares out to sea, is named Cabo Blanco (White Cape) after the vertical-walled island at its tip, which owes its name to the accumulation of guano deposited by seabirds, including Costa Rica’s largest community of brown boobies (some 500 breeding pairs). Two-thirds of the reserve is off-limits to visitors. One-third is accessible along hiking trails, some steep in parts. Sendero Sueco leads to the totally unspoiled white-sand beaches of Playa Balsita and Playa Cabo Blanco, which are separated by a headland (you can walk around it at low tide).
